Call-Out Culture With Loretta Ross // Reconcile the Aisle Podcast

Call-out culture is a very hot topic. The far right uses the words "cancel culture" and the "call-out" when they want an excuse to be racist, yet we have to admit that the environment on the internet can be combative.

So how do we make sense of call-out culture?

In the latest episode of my podcast Reconcile the Aisle I spoke with the one, the only, Loretta Ross. You would be hard pressed to find someone with the depth of experience and perspective that she has in civil rights movements and civil discourse.
In our conversation we spoke about:

  • How calling out too frequently is splintering our potential for change because it is horizontally targeted. And it is moving people who don’t completely agree with us to the right.

  • Call-out is a civil rights strategy for people in power that are inaccessible. If you have access to people you have a lot of choices before calling people out.

  • How opting not to call people out doesn't mean letting people off the hook; every call out opportunity is also a call in opportunity.

  • How we can woo people back to the progressive movement who have been burnt by call outs.

Then my character Judy asks about ageism and connecting with younger activists.
