Making Sketch on Netflix With the Aunty Donna Boys // Reconcile the Aisle

If you haven’t watched the Aunty Donna sketch series on Netflix, Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun, you’re missing out. I came upon the series after a trusted comedy friend told me it was worth watching. I figured I’d view an episode or two and then move on. But after 20 minutes of the first I knew I was going to watch every episode, as well as everything else these dudes have created.

So I was psyched to talk to not one, not two, but three people from the comedy group. There are members of the group behind the scenes as well as in front of the camera, so the interviews were tailored to their specialties.

In my conversation with Sam Lingham we talk about what it means to be the head writer of a sketch group and the ways they’ve learned to work together. Then my character Donna Disney discusses her figurine collection.

Max Miller and I talk capturing spontaneity on film and the resurgence of absurd comedy. Then my character Melania tries to pitch Max, but then Ivanka steals her idea, and (another) family drama is born.

And with Mark Samual Bonanno we dive into our shared inability to be mainstream, the Italian American experience in Australia, and translating comedy to the U.S. audience. Then my character Queens Marie then grills Mark about the dating pool in Oz.

Dive in and let me know how your favorite part of an episode!
